Personality

background

From his childhood, Alm has been a kind-hearted and friendly individual, holding strong bonds with those he is particularly close to. Raised by the famed knight Mycen, Alm had a strong sense of justice and subtly idealistic morals, most of which are a result of his being practically confined to Ram Village his entire adolescence. By the time he finally leaves the village, he has a black-and-white view of justice, often judging on the spot, and is quick to blame individuals for several follies in situations he does not necessarily have the full context for. Nonetheless, Alm's morals are quick to steer him on the path of the greater good. He wears his heart on his sleeve and is very sensitive and emotionally expressive, often verbally communicating his insecurities and not holding back tears in melancholy situations.Alm is aware of his own shortcomings, particularly with his own naïveté and his earliest actions for the Deliverance were sometimes plagued with self-doubt, especially when its then-leader Clive made Alm leader, a decision he felt was only because of his pedigree as Mycen's grandson. By the time he liberates Zofia from Desaix, he still had some doubts, trying to justify his actions to Mycen when they reunite in Zofia Castle. However, when Mycen stops him and simply asks him if he is prepared, Alm gives a decisive affirmation, satisfying Mycen and reminding him of another great individual.Alm and Celica's bond shaped each other's view on the world. Celica gave Alm the introspective accounts of the outside world, fueling his desire to find his place in it. Likewise, Alm gave Celica unconditional love and kindness that spared her from her feelings of loneliness in a world that seemed dead-set on making her suffer. Their reunion years after Celica's departure were filled with nothing short of pure happiness and a rekindling of their mutual affection. While the encounter ended on a bitter note, Alm still felt concern for her and easily forgave her when they later reconciled. Celica's benevolence is heavily imprinted on Alm, as he never turns down an opportunity to help others once informed, no matter how extraneous the effort would be. While others such as Lukas or Clive often advise him not to take detours from their cause, Alm firmly believes that if he can help anyone in need, he will do all that he can to do so, leading to several people joining his cause out of gratitude, including Luthier, Delthea, Tatiana, and Zeke. Likewise, Alm is very forgiving, even against those who spite him for the greater cause, as he offered Fernand the opportunity to rejoin the Deliverance despite defecting to Rigel.Alm has a deep longing for a family, as he is said to have grown up lonely in said village, even getting deeply disturbed when an elder said that Mycen had no children. Nonetheless, Alm respects Mycen the most in the world and, even after the revelation that Mycen is indeed not his grandfather by blood, still affectionately refers to him as Grandpa. He ends up projecting his desire for a family onto other party members, especially his Ram Village friends, often idealizing them as his family by treating them as such in order to counterbalance his loneliness. Ultimately, Alm cherishes his childhood friends and continues to rely on them throughout the war, even treating them well after the war.His longing for familial bonds is further emphasized later in the story, as he is shocked and angered over killing his father Rudolf, crying after hearing about his father's plan to become a destroyer to save Valentia, and also getting extremely distraught with his cousin Berkut's death, lamenting that he wanted to hear stories about his father and form a familial bond with Berkut that he has never had, nor ever will experience. He has a vaguely puerile sense of humor, as he loves to make puns, and is a terrible dancer.

Background

background

Born in the year 384 in the Valentian calendar and year 590 in the Archanean calendar, Alm was raised in Ram Village by his grandfather, Mycen. The identity of Alm's parents was always a mystery, though he paid it no mind except when local villagers would speak curious rumors that Mycen never had children. Alm grew up alongside a group of other Ram Village children, Gray, Tobin, Kliff, and Faye, all of whom were trained in the art of combat by Mycen. Alm also grew up with Celica, a young girl whom Mycen was taking care of, whom he was particularly close to. Alm and Celica even had a similar brand on their left and right hands, respectively. Their time together was cut short when Slayde, an enforcer to Desaix, wanders into Ram Village and takes interest in Celica due to the special mark on her hand. Mycen enigmatically takes Celica away for her safety, leaving Alm heartbroken. Alm vowed to Celica as she left that they would one day meet again.

Abilities

Battle information

Physical Prowess & Scaling
Alm possesses Superhuman Physical Characteristics across the board, with boundless stamina and a natural aptitude for combat. His strength, speed, and durability scale dramatically throughout his journey:
Attack Potency & Striking Strength: Starts at City level even in his youth (capable of fighting veterans like Slayde and matching powerful knights like Zeke). By receiving the sage Halcyon's power and later transcending his mortal limits at the King's Altar, his power reaches at least Large Island level, and possibly Multi-Solar System level when wielding the Falchion to battle the fell god Duma.Speed: Exhibits Superhuman movement speed paired with Massively Hypersonic combat speed and reactions, demonstrated by his ability to dodge Bolting magic and keep pace with highly-trained Rigelian elites. His attack speed increases even further when utilizing the Double Lion combat art.Durability: Scales directly with his attack potency, beginning at City level (capable of taking blows from multiple dragons) and peaking at potentially Multi-Solar System level as he is able to withstand direct hits from Duma.Combat Skills & Development
Weapon Mastery
: Trained extensively by Mycen, Alm is an Expert Swordsman. Upon promoting to the Hero class, he also gains mastery over Bows, expanding his arsenal.
Accelerated Development (Battle & Leveling): Alm experiences rapid, continuous growth when challenged. Through his Speedtaker and Great Talent abilities, the longer a battle rages, the faster and stronger he permanently becomes. He adapts mid-fight to outpace his enemies, eventually moving so swiftly that his raw kinetic speed adds concussive force to his strikes.Acrobatics: Highly agile; Alm can control his descent to land safely on his feet after being launched into the air, perform backflips to evade strikes, and jump to incredible heights to exploit enemy weak points.Combat Rhythm & Counterattack Denial: Alm fights with an overwhelming, oppressive pacing. He can strike with such blinding speed and precision (Windsweep) that martial opponents are left completely unable to retaliate. Furthermore, his mastery of combat flow (Null Follow-Up) allows him to shatter enemy guards, ensuring his consecutive strikes cannot be interrupted while completely denying the enemy the chance to press their own advantage.Extrasensory Perception & Non-Physical Interaction: Alm can interact with and damage immaterial beings, such as elemental entities (Post-Sacrifice Rinea's fire body) and the intangible specters found in the Fear Mountain Shrine.Air Manipulation & Range: In the Conqueror class, his mastery is so profound that his melee strikes can deal damage from meters away via displaced air. Combined with bows and Bowrange +1, his effective range spans tens of meters.Arsenal & Artifacts
Alm’s equipment grants him a vast array of hax and magical abilities:
Mila’s Turnwheel: Grants passive Divination, Retrocognition, and Time Manipulation. It autonomously shows Alm visions of the past or future and allows him to rewind time mid-battle (up to 6 times initially, enhanced to 12 times later). The Royal Sword: Bestows the Recovery skill, granting Low-Mid Regeneration capable of healing fatal wounds like torso stabs. It also allows Alm to use Scendscale, an Energy Projection attack that coats his blade in blue energy to strike from a distance. The Falchion (and Dracofalchion): A divine blade housing the goddess Mila, highly lethal to dragons and divine beasts.Regeneration & Overwhelm: It heals his wounds rhythmically throughout a battle. If Alm initiates combat in peak physical condition, the blade allows him to strike twice instantaneously before the enemy can even react, though pushing his body to this limit causes slight physical recoil.Lone Wolf Empowerment: The Dracofalchion variant grants him sudden, explosive bursts of movement range and dramatically amplifies his physical stats when he fights completely alone or while heavily outnumbered.Sealing & Deicide: Capable of sealing weakened divine threats and bypassing the invulnerability of gods.Light & Soul Manipulation: Emits blinding light, and possesses the power to revive the dead and restore souls.Luna Arc & True-Bond Bow: Divine bows uniquely suited for anti-air combat.Defense Piercing: The Luna Arc fires arrows that organically ignore a massive percentage of the enemy's physical armor and magical barriers.Team Synergy: The True-Bond Bow resonates with the presence of Alm's allies, granting his entire vanguard continuously scaling strength (Great Talent), passively restoring his stamina after skirmishes, and creating an aura that vastly mitigates the kinetic impact of an enemy's first strike.Scepter of Love: A ceremonial weapon that weaponizes the opponent's own physical bulk against them. It dynamically increases Alm's striking power by scaling off the enemy's physical defense, while simultaneously crushing their attack power based on their magical resistance.Invulnerability & Immortality (Type 2) Negation: The Deicide skill allows Alm to bypass divine protections and kill gods like Duma.Resurrection & Soul Manipulation: Showcased the power to revive Celica and restore her soul.Resistance to Power Nullification: Allows Alm to strike Duma even while the god's Oculus is active.Combat Arts & Equipment Versatility
Through various weapons and rings, Alm gains massive Statistics Amplification and specialized effects:
True Damage & Energy Projection (Scendscale): Coats his blade in blue energy to strike from a distance. Alm channels his raw physical might into unblockable shockwaves that deal devastating "true damage" regardless of the enemy's defenses, though the sheer force causes minor internal strain to himself.Armor Piercing & Damage Reduction Negation (Lunar Flash): Alm's signature bow technique. He unleashes a volley that ignores up to 35% of an enemy's durability, converts his own speed into lethal damage, and outright pierces through abilities or magics meant to reduce incoming damage. It also stifles the enemy, preventing them from charging their own ultimate attacks.Damage Boosts & Reductions: Can perform Critical Hits (tripling his attack damage). He utilizes skills like Anti-Fliers and Anti-Terrors for situational damage boosts, and employs Defensive, Sanctuary, or Pavise to reduce incoming damage.Offensive Hax: Access to Encloser (Paralysis Inducement), Roundhouse (Limited Durability Negation, bypassing half of enemy defense), Destreza (Probability Manipulation, guaranteeing hits on fatal blows), and various Venin weapons (Poison Manipulation).Special Acceleration (Time's Pulse / Pulse On: Blades): Alm can rapidly gather the energy needed for his most devastating techniques, allowing him to unleash finishing blows with terrifying frequency.Aura Debuffs & Buff Nullification (Lull / Chill / Threaten): Alm projects an intimidating battlefield presence. He can passively seek out the most heavily armored foe and shatter their defenses (Chill Def), drain the kinetic energy from enemies within his immediate vicinity (Threaten Atk/Spd), and instantly strip away any magical, tactical, or movement enhancements applied to his targets (Lull Echo).Elemental & Magic Damage: Weapons like the Lightning Sword grant Electricity Manipulation and allow Alm to inflict magical damage, which completely negates physical defenses. He also has access to Poison Manipulation via Venin weapons and Paralysis Inducement via the Encloser art.Defense & Utility: Celica's charm grants Power Nullification (dispelling Nuibaba's magic). The Hexlock Shield provides Magic Absorption. The Prayer Ring grants Miracle, giving Alm Limited Immortality (Type 2) by allowing him to survive fatal blows with 1 HP.Exponential Enhancement (Bonus Doubler): When empowered by magical buffs or allied rallying cries, Alm can exponentially multiply their effects, turning minor tactical enhancements into overwhelming physical supremacy.Resistances
Alm possesses formidable natural and equipment-based resistances:
Magic: Possesses a naturally high resistance stat against magical attacks.Soul Manipulation (Unconventional): Like others in his universe, Alm can survive without his soul, though it reduces him to a husk.Extreme Heat: Capable of walking through the lava of the Dragon's Maw, taking only minor damage over time.Intelligence & Weaknesses
Intelligence (Gifted): Alm is a brilliant tactical commander and warrior. He successfully navigated the heavily guarded Rigelian treasure vault alone (defeating liches, necrodragons, and gargoyles), led the charge to slay the fell god Duma, and conquered the abyssal Labyrinth of Thabes alongside his companions—ultimately defeating the apocalyptic "Creation" where entire senatorial armies had failed.
Weaknesses: Alm is deeply idealistic and fiercely attached to his loved ones, making him emotionally vulnerable to manipulation. Additionally, his most powerful Combat Arts drain his own HP to execute, turning prolonged fights into a battle of attrition.

Trivia

Headcanons/Fun facts

As with many characters in Gaiden, Alm's hair color differs in various art assets. It is green in the manual and cover art, but blue in-game. In the manga adaptation of Fire Emblem Gaiden, Alm has green hair as well. In Fire Emblem Awakening, Alm has green hair, but the very tips are blue, effectively combining both hair colors. In Shadows of Valentia, his hair is consistently green in both official art and in the game itself. He is one of the few main characters to have a specified last name, the others being Sigurd, Seliph, Leif, Elincia, Jill, and Sanaki, as well as the vast majority of the playable cast in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.Alm's artwork for both the original Gaiden and Shadows of Valentia depicts him wielding the Royal Sword. His Awakening artwork depicts him wielding Alm's Blade, which is visually based on the Royal Sword, while his Heroes artwork depicts him with the Valentian Falchion. His artwork in Gaiden, Shadows of Valentia, and Heroes depicts him in the Fighter Class, while his DLC artwork in Awakening depicts him in the Dread Fighter Class.Alm was originally right-handed in Gaiden and all subsequent materials. However, Shadows of Valentia depicts Alm as left-handed, both in his promotional art and in-game appearances. This is further shown in Fire Emblem Heroes where he has different animations compared to most sword users.
This makes him the first known character and Lord character who is left-handed.
The reasons for the change, according to the developers, were that the motion team said that many new poses and patterns can be made if the character was simply left handed, as well as to make Alm better resemble a hero with the strength to overcome any enemy, such as Alexander the Great, who was also said to be left handed, while also serving as a contrast to Celica's brand.
Alm's Brave Hero Fire Emblem Heroes variant is based on his appearance on the box art for Fire Emblem Gaiden as redrawn by Shadows of Valentia character artist Hidari. Hidari similarly based Celica's Brave Hero variant design on her Gaiden box art appearance when he drew her the previous year.In Shadows of Valentia, Alm is the only playable character without a spell list, as he does not learn magic naturally and cannot use a Pitchfork. In Shadows of Valentia, Alm has a special animation whenever the player phase starts; however, as a Hero, this animation depicts him holding his sword in his right hand.
In the raw Japanese script of Gaiden, aside from his use of "boku" as a personal pronoun, Alm tends to use rather feminine speech mannerisms.
As implied from the flavor text in Shadows of Valentia, Alm has a taste for landscape paintings and, like Celica, is quite fond of cats.
Alm's English voice actor also voices Soren in Heroes and the Gatekeeper in Three Houses.
As a Hero, Alm was the first main character able to naturally use bows.
